BLAIR HOUSE

ACO Architects revitalized the heritage shophouse, blending the past with modern design.

This project is a purposeful restoration of a heritage shophouse nestled within a historical district in Singapore. ACO Architects redefined the boundaries of preservation by not just referencing the past, but breathing new life into the original structure. The incorporation of tangible elements created a seamless dialogue between past and present.

Timeless materials were repurposed, creating a seamless link between history and modernity.

The building’s rich history was honoured by repurposing certain key elements. Meticulous craftsmanship preserved the soul of the building, connecting generations to the stories embedded within its walls.

Timber floorboards, that were previously from the second storey, were transformed into a vertical screen in the central courtyard. Imprints of the joists were cast into the raw concrete walls while the untouched markings of the original staircase remain as a testament to the passage of time. A new spiral staircase, clad in timber, evokes the presence of an ancestral altar which stood in its place. The rear extension features a metal mesh façade that captures the shadow impression of the former structure, preserving its essence for posterity.

Centered around the comfort and well-being of its occupants, the central courtyard functions as a lightwell and a ventilation circulation point, ensuring a harmonious flow of air and light throughout the entire space. Traditional elements, such as ‘rain windows,’ allow for ventilation during rainy months, enhancing both functionality and the building’s historical identity.

In a fast-paced society where the relevance of Architectural heritage is constantly challenged, the restoration of this project acknowledges and respects the coexistence of past and present. The facade's peeling paint work is deliberately preserved as a poignant reminder of the building's storied past, offering a glimpse into its former self and invites passers-by to engage in the building’s history while embracing its modern transformation.
